This classic gin cocktail originated in Paris during the first world war. Accredited to Henry Tepe of Henry’s Bar it was quickly taken on by Harry MacElhone of the famous Harry’s New York Bar at 5 Rue Daunou Paris, later frequented by the likes of Hemmingway and Gershwin. Harry introduced it to Ciro’s Club in London shortly after and in the 1930’s it appeared in the Savoy Cocktail Book. French 75 was ordered at Ricks Bar in the Bogart film, Casablanca and got its name from the French 75mm field gun as both had a terrific kick.
