We are proud to announce the launch of our new African Spiced Rum, once again distilled at the amazing Henley Distillery.
Our Urban Rhino African Spiced Rum is a contemporary-styled spiced rum, created using a blend of techniques paying homage to our African roots and our reason for being – The Rhino Orphanage in Limpopo, South Africa.
Whilst fundamentally a Caribbean spirit, we have taken some special African botanicals and flavours to create a unique rum.
Here’s how we do it.
First a smooth column-distilled rum imported from the Caribbean is redistilled with cloves, nutmeg and allspice, which brings these botanicals into sharp focus. We then steep ginger, cassia bark, tonka bean, orange, and our super special African ingredient - baobab fruit, allowing the full flavour of these botanicals to infuse into the spirit at their own leisure. Finally, a little bit of caramel sweetness is added to help create a luxurious, drawn-out finish.
Tasting Notes
Appearance – Clear, medium gold.
Aroma – Medium (+), fresh and citrussy with warm baking spices.
Palate – Medium sweetness. Pronounced intensity. The spirit has a silky texture with peppery notes on the tongue. Initial orange and ginger-warmth hits at the front of the palate and fills the mouth. Ginger is then joined by baking spices, which are cut through by lighter citrus-notes. The finish is medium to medium (+) in length with some complexity. Light, sweet floral vanilla presents itself towards the end, whilst a subtle earthiness builds as time goes on.
And here’s more about how amazing Boabab powder is - our super special African ingredient.
Baobab powder originates from the Baobab fruit, which grows naturally across the African Savana on one of the weirdest looking trees in the world.
It has been an integral part of local diets for centuries but has recently gained a global reputation as a superfood.
The Baobab tree is often referred to as “The Tree of Life”, growing across the wonderous African continent. Its massive trunk reaching up to almost 50m wide is said to have angered the Gods by its constant grumbles over the beauty of other trees, so they planted it upside down.
Our baobab powder is from the fruit of trees in Africa where every tree is community-owned and wild-harvested by local farmers. The baobab pulp is dried, tumbled and sieved to produce a fine powder.
When dried, baobab pulp produces the powder that contains more Vitamin C than an orange, more Potassium than a banana, more Calcium than milk, and even more Magnesium than spinach.
Raw, minimal processing is used as the fruit dries naturally whilst still on the tree, keeping the product 100% pure in its natural form.
And did you know that the massive trunks have been used as jails, post offices and bush pubs while many baobabs live to a ripe old age – with one recently collapsed Namibian tree known as “Grootboom” thought to be 1,275 years old.
